Home learning provides opportunity for children to reinforce and strengthen skills learned in school.
We use online platforms: Tapestry, Seesaw and Doodle, as well as providing home reading books.
EYFS and Key Stage 1:
Children in Nursery and Reception are set a weekly home learning activity linked to their half termly theme for learning. This is set digitally on Tapestry. Activities are set every Friday and due the following Wednesday. Families can support children to upload photos and videos of how they completed the activity. Teachers will then respond to each post and add these to children’s Tapestry journal.
Children in Nursery take home a story book each week to be read at home for the week. Reading books are then swapped on a Wednesday. The Nursery staff team will record the name of the book in each child’s Reading Journal. We encourage families to then share the child’s reading experience e.g. did they enjoy the story, what was their favourite part or who their favourite character was? Children in Reception also take home a story book once a week. In addition to this children in Reception take home the levelled phonically decodable book they have been reading in class each Friday. We ask for families to support their child reading this for at least 5 minutes every day to support fluent reading.
Children in Years 1 and 2 (KS1) are set a literacy and maths home learning activity each week. This is also set digitally on Tapestry. This is set on a Friday and due the following Wednesday. Children in KS1 are given weekly spellings to practice at home. These are also set via Tapestry. Children in KS1 then also take home the levelled phonically decodable book they have been reading in class that week. Families are asked to record how their child found reading the text in their Reading Journal.
Children in Reception and KS1 are also given a login to Doodle Maths, an online maths learning programme by the school. Once children have completed the initial assessment, Doodle provides mathematical learning activities at an appropriate level. Progress and stars are then celebrated as part of weekly Achievement Assemblies.
Key Stage 2:
In KS2, home learning is set digitally on Seesaw and Doodle. On Seesaw, a home learning activity is set every Friday and is due the following Wednesday. Children should submit home learning via Seesaw by using the template uploaded by the teacher. They can also complete their activity offline and upload a photo of their work. Parents and carers should sign up for a family account where they can oversee their child’s work including any activities completed on Seesaw at school.
Weekly spellings are set on a Monday via Doodle Spell with a spelling test every Friday based on these spelling rules. To supplement this, children have access to the full suite of Doodle – Maths, Times Tables, English and Spell where they are encouraged to complete 10 minutes a day using their personal login.
This is in addition to home reading, which children should spend a minimum of 10-15 minutes a day on.
Half term and end of term holiday projects are also set on Seesaw on the final day of term, called POW Projects. These help children prepare for the new themes of learning coming up and are due back the first Wednesday of the new term.
