Lab18@HP is a specialist Science area where children observe, experience, investigate and explore the ideas they are enquiring in a scientific way. The children safely utilise the excellent resources available to them in the lab to design experiments, test their hypotheses and develop their understanding of key scientific ideas.

Confidence in the use of language and a range of communication skills gives children the capacity to participate fully in our society. Opportunities to communicate in a range of contexts and to a range of audiences are woven into each child’s learning experience at Hargrave Park. This is done through a range of literacy genres and planned speaking and listening opportunities, in addition to class assemblies and other performances.

We aim to foster a love of reading here at Hargrave Park School. Once a child can read, then they hold a vital key to their own learning. Through reading, pupils can develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Reading enables pupils to build on what they already know and to acquire new knowledge.

Maths is an integral part of the world in which we live. Children learn vital maths skills during primary school which set a foundation for future maths learning at school and in real-life contexts. Children build on these skills through reasoning, investigation and problem solving from EYFS to Year 6, with a strong emphasis on real-life application.

Through our computing curriculum at Hargrave Park we aim to give our pupils the life-skills that will enable them to embrace and utilise new technology in a creative, as well as responsible and safe way in order to flourish.

Children need to be ready to learn and this can only happen with the right personal, social, health and emotional development. Children learn skills and attributes to maintain physical and emotional wellbeing life both now and in the future. Through PSHE lessons, children learn how to develop a sense of identity, form healthy relationships, keep their body healthy, and keep their mind healthy through developing an awareness of their emotions and how to manage them.

Our high-quality physical education curriculum supports children to understand and manage their bodies in a range of contexts – individually and as part of a team - developing gross motor skills, balance, coordination, strength, flexibility and fitness. The wide range of activities on offer here at Hargrave Park give all children opportunity to find physical activities they are good at and can enjoy.

We want to give our children a wide variety of ways to explore the world and to express themselves. Learning through the Creative Arts provides sensory experiences as an engaging way of understanding the world. It stimulates creativity and imagination, enabling children to communicate what they see, feel and think using a variety of processes and materials, thus embedding understanding more meaningfully.

Planning the curriculum to be experienced through humanity-based themes ensures that all learning happens within a rich and engaging context by which the children learn about the world they live in, the people in it and the times that have come before. Using a carefully curated collection of themes which relate to one another over time ensures a thorough and varied experience, building on prior knowledge and understanding.

In KS2, children learn Spanish for their modern foreign language study. Once a week, Spanish is taught using the Language Angels scheme. The interactive and friendly scheme covers the five core domains of language acquisition: speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar.
